BROEN Energy Saving Project

At BROEN, we have launched an ambitious 'Energy Saving Project' aimed at ensuring reduced energy consumption throughout our production. Additionally, we have allocated an employee primarily dedicated to energy optimization and monitoring of our consumption.

"We have set short-term and long-term goals to reduce energy consumption in BROEN's production. Some activities have already been implemented, including a reduction of standby consumption through the implementation of intelligent process controls and the shutdown of selected machines on weekends. Furthermore, the temperature in various washing and drying processes has been continuously optimized, leading to a reduction in energy consumption," says Torben Hansen, Quality & Environment Manager at BROEN.

Further reduction in energy consumption will be achieved by:

  • Reducing air leakage in the compressed air system
The consumption of compressors is continuously monitored, including to identify changes in standby consumption. In addition, a listening device is used to monitor and repair leaks in both the compressed air pipe system and machines to minimize air loss resulting in energy savings on approx. 25,000 kWh per year.

  • Implementing intelligent control of compressors
To further reduce energy consumption for compressed air, an intelligent control system is installed that optimizes start/stop and idle consumption ensuring that the most energy-efficient compressor(s) is running. This control is expected to reduce energy consumption with approx. 35,000 per year.

  • Minimizing standby consumption on several machines
More intelligent controls are continuously being installed on various machines/lines to avoid unnecessary standby consumption when machines are not running. As an example, various pumps, conveyor belts and washing machines will automatically stop shortly after a CNC machine stops. When fully implemented in all machines and lines yearly savings on > 60,000 kWh.

  • Decreasing energy consumption in various washing processes
Heating of water in various washing machines requires a lot of energy, and therefore we continuously focus on optimizing this operation. In close collaboration with our suppliers we make tests with lower temperatures and other washing chemicals. As a result of this collaboration and testing, the washing temperature of several machines has been lowered by 10°C, which has resulted in a saving of > 50,000 kWh per year.
